I hate to be that guy, but how necessary is it to read the first book in the series? This one's set up seems more up my alley than the first one, but unsure if it's a good idea to start with this one.

While there were a few references to the first book (I believe the victim as well as the perpetrator are mentioned), it did not take away from my enjoyment of the book. (less)
