The stories seem independent throughout most of the book, but they are closely related thematically -- therefore the "closed and common orbit", meaning that both stories are following closely related paths. Both stories are about people who started out with little or no autonomy, who grow and learn to determine their own destinies and join "human" society as fully autonomous beings who integrate into their chosen families.(less)

The whole thematic focus of Becky Chambers' writing focuses on what you describe, but given the focus of this book is literally a character finding their place in their body as much as in the world, you could also argue it fits this book *better* thematically than even the first.

But if you don't click with the style overall, it might be better to give the rest of the series a pass if it bothers you. Does that help?(less)
