I think we've all noticed the trend, but I (for one) don't find it off-putting. I can think of two reasons why they are a good thing.

First, they're terrific as audible books that entertain me during my morning and evening drive times when I'm not in the mood for my musical playlist. Individually, they may not add a LOT of pages to my total-pages-read-for-the-year, but they add more to that metric than listening to 70's classic rock... so there's that!

Second (and more importantly), they are the appetizers that may set up a feast. I've found that a number of these short stories provide some useful backstory or an introduction to characters that encourage me to imbibe on the novel length works. Sebastian Rudd and Scott Harvath are two such examples.

I assume it's mostly motivated by marketing and building an author's fan base, but that's okay. I still feed sumptuously on the longer, more challenging, works quite to my content.

I don't think you are obliged to "learn to like short stories", etc. I'd encourage you to see them for what they are; don't expect them to be what they are not. Unless you are committed to reading every word ever published by a given author, feel free to take them or leave them at your pleasure.(less)
