Is the main character, Jen, meant to be partially deaf? There are some odd mentions in the text, like when she says she didn't understand all the films she saw at the movies with Lily because they didn't have subtitles? And she has a flashing alarm rather than one with sound? But it hasn't been actually stated that she is which I'm finding super confusing?

Ley Holloway She is deaf, and uses sign language with her daughter.
