General comment of all childrens books & video games; why don't/can't we read to or with our children any more over the age of 6yrs?

Has anyone read the ARC versus the first published edition? I have to read this for a class, and the eBay seller I bought from did not indicate it was an ARC, so I am just wondering if there is a huge difference.....
