Lincoln cared nothing about freeing the slaves and in fact wanted to send them to panama to start a mining colony of blacks only. He had no intention in freeing the slaves and the south did not break away over slavery. It was due to taxation without representation. Kind of familiar. Slavery was horrible and the founders agreed it was bad in the beginning but agreed that it was necessary for the new nation. This is not a writing of "slavery apologizing" it is a cold hard look at what the ramifications of adding 200,000 new people to the population and workforce without sufficient resources to support them. Exactly what Lincoln feared.(less)
