Everything about this book sounds great. However...I can’t get past the synopsis. “East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the neighborhood's high crime rate.” Doesn’t Long Beach have ITS OWN police department? So, of course the LAPD would “ignore” its crimes. It’s not their jurisdiction. Or am I totally off base?

It's more about the second part of the synopsis, that IQ solves cases NO police department (whichever jurisdiction) will touch.(less)

I'm about 4 hours into the audiobook version of this book (chapter 5) and am not enjoying it at all. Don't find any of the characters enjoyable, or have any real desire to find out what happens from here. Does it get any better? Is it worth it, or should I just give up? I'm reading it for a book club or wouldn't have even bothered getting this far... Please advise ASAP. Many thanks!

I don't know if I would have liked an audiobook-the profanity and trash talking are not something I would normally enjoy or appreciate, but as it's pretty central to the story I understand why it's used and perhaps that's easier to read than to hear.(less)
