Why did Hardy classify his novel as romance and fantasy (romance is quite clear, but why fantasy)? Thanks for your help.

Which version of Two on a tower is best to read? I read the 1975 Pan Macmillan years ago. cover is the couple at the top of tower with telescope. It seems you can get an original edition and Hardy's revised edition(s).
