It is difficult being in love with someone suffering from depression etc as the smallest trigger can crack them and send them spiralling. The stone thrower clearly and deeply loves the glass woman but is constantly worrying about her shattering. He ends up having an affair with someone "..he does not have to see too much or love too carefully." This story for me highlights the difficulty of living and loving someone who is mentally ill and can "shatter" as well as being someone who is mentally ill and can see the impact they make on their loved ones.
