It is supposed to be an ambiguous family that could be anyone's family. It raises the question of what would you do for love/your family which is why I believe everyone is left nameless. (less)

I do not think this book is appropriate for 99.8% of middle schoolers. Exceptional children would be the exception. This book is incredibly dark and disturbing. I don't want to spoil anything but I would encourage you to read this for yourself before considering whether to allow a child to read it.

If you want me to just shut up and give you a number, I'd say the average child should be allowed to read this at 14 to 16 years of age depending on how sensitive they are to... horrific things.(less)
