Your hope I think can best (and eventually) be achieved if more of us Muslims were more engaging with our neighbors of other faiths (or without faiths) and lived up to the exemplary standards that Islam demands of us. But too many of us don't and in that sense many of us have become like followers of just about any other faith, rendering it as a superficial badge of identity more than a central core of one's being that drives ethical and moral behavior.

But that still makes us different from the terrorists trapped in their self-spun webs of cultural and religious identity politics, catalyzed, but not caused by certain Western foreign policy choices and colonial history. They, like countless people before them have found ways to shoehorn their grievances into a religious frame and know how to leverage it to get aggrieved people to follow them.

I know how we use the identity of "jihadist" and we sort of know who we mean by the term, but I avoid it because to such people's great delight, this usurps a highly positive trait with which ordinary Muslims identify and conflates it with the thoughts and actions of detestable people who commit wanton acts of violence against defenseless victims.(less)
