Hello there, Birgitt...

It is also important to know that the majority of Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on the 6th of January (as they follow the Julian Calendar - which is thirteen days behind the Gregorian).

The Greeks changed their observance in the 1920's ... as such, there are Greek Orthodox Christians who follow the "Old Calendar" (My family is one of them. We are the minority in Greek Orthodoxy). Therefore, based on the modern calendar, December 25th falls on the eve of the 7th of January.

Epiphany, in Greek is pronounced the "Theo-fánia" and is therefore celebrated on the 6th for those following the Gregorian calendar, and the 19th (therefore the 6th) of January in the old calendar system.

The only time when the two sides merge is for the Observance of Easter and therefore, Lent and the Pentecost.

It is confusing, but this is how it truly is.

Therefore, Epiphany and Christmas are two totally different Festivals, but celebrated according to the Observance of traditional Orthodoxy and the calendar - or otherwise.

As such, all other Orthodox observers still maintain the original calendar and its tenets.

I hope that this helps. It is something that I am passionate about, as I come from the Julian system, and there are many simple misconceptions... and this is something I want to avoid.

Warmest,
G. :)(less)
