The only advantage to reading it after the first book is that you know what happened to ship that left with the main character's mother on it, while no one else in this book knows.

I see the book's shelved as LGBT, can anybody expand on that? I've set myself a challenge to only read books with actually relevant LGBT characters in them and it's proving to be,,, well a challenge.

The main character doesn't really interact with anyone outside of working on his case very much, a couple of flirtations. He might be fluid/bi/pan?
The first book in this series has a queer main character.
