Actually, I'd recommend reading this book of shorts _before_ reading The Windup Girl. This is because two of the stories -- The Calorie Man, and Yellow Card Man -- take place in the same fictional world (and we catch a glimpse of the Windup Girl in Yellow Card Man).

By reading these two short stories, you'll immediately know if you want to invest the time in reading the more involved, longer novel.(less)
