The Magus sees the light over Lorens' shoulder as well because Lorens and the Magus and Brida are all each other's soulmates. He sees that Brida has already met a soulmate and is in love with him which is ultimately the reason that he lets her go; for her, because he doesn't want her heart to be pulled in two directions and for himself too, because he realizes that the night he spent with her is enough to sustain him for a lifetime. His purpose is simply more than what Brida and he together can accomplish. I think if Brida had stuck with the Path of the Sun, then maybe the Magus would've been a better choice in the end but their paths are fundamentally split now. It is my understanding that the Magus sees that he might just meet another person in the future that he will come to love. Again, if Brida had never met Lorens, she might have had her ending with the Magus. Sorry if it was too descriptive, but I just read this book and the ending, even if it was a bit sad, was also very satisfying.(less)

It speaks about finding and understanding love. But not the toxic love that societies seems to accept as a norm. It rather says that letting the person that you love bee free to make her/his choices is a form of love. Letting your loved one go because she/he is already happy with someone else is a form of love. And yet people failed to get this from the plot of the book. (less)

He is brazilian, where african folklore mixes with a type of pentecostal christianity (the type that believes in speaking in tongues and such), so given his background it's understandable.
As to why he writes: he likes money, and he thinks he has something to say. (less)
