The connection between storylines is more obvious here than it was in Cloud Atlas, and you don't have to wait as long to piece things together. Also, I'd say that the intersection of storylines, while entertaining, is not as important to the story (or the author's point). McDonald is really showcasing the world he has made, and the big cast of characters give him more of an opportunity to do so. Oh, and I wouldn't call this a dystopia. Simply near-future science fiction. (less)
