Does anyone have a recommendation for a similar book? I feel that Amazon's ratings duped me into this selection. How did he decide that the Odal rune, inheritance, should be interpreted as separation or retreat?

As far as recommending a book for a good journey with the runes I would suggest checking out Taking up the Runes by Diana L. Paxson. She shows you the rune poems that go with each rune, talks about the history of the rune and gives other well known perspectives that have written about the runes as well as her own for a modern meaning.
