Just read this and loved it but was confused by the Afterword which says this was based on actual diaries of a maid. So was this maid actually in love with a bachelor doctor who committed suicide? Couldn't figure out how much was fact and how much fiction.

She's adding a bit of credulity to the story, as if she is reporting on the events that took place, as well as adding a bit of "history", rather than being just the author of an incredulous story!(less)
