Would it be possible to read this book without reading the first one?

The second volume shows flashback events the first volume's flashbacks mention, and setups and payoffs could easily be reversed if you read volume two before volume one. The frame narrative with the Rebels crew, though, does go straight through from volume one to volume two. It was made to be read Vol. 1 then Vol. 2, but you wouldn't miss out on too much to read it in reverse.(less)
