They are complex characters who are allowed to be as flawed as the men …moreI don't think either Livia or her mother are completely horrible human beings. They are complex characters who are allowed to be as flawed as the men around them - which in itself is rare, IMO. There's often this need to make female characters "likable" otherwise the audience might aggressively and misogynistically hate them (though lord knows, they often do that anyway). Notice how male characters are almost never held to this standard - audiences have no issue rooting for the likes of Walter White or Tony Soprano.(less)

I hate love triangles, it is such a big trope nowadays and it's always so much drama about a girl who just cannot choose. This was different, a new solution that perfectly fits in the new world.
