p. 111 "40 percent of Americans aged eighteen to twenty-four believe they will need to migrate abroad in search for work." Any idea where this statistic came from? Does this seem like it could possibly be true? If so, what might be the backgrounds and aspirations of these young people? Where do they think they need to migrate to, and what sorts of work would they be seeking? Thanks!

"The statistic about American youth feeling they'd need to migrate abroad at some point in search of work comes from a short time after the financial crisis. A number of surveys were conducted by the usual polling agencies such as Pew in which this came up. The number may have diminished if the question were asked again today -- but at the same time, the number of actual American migrants has gone up very steadily. Hence, this is a real trend to take very seriously."

Subsequent discussion on facebook with friends leads me to believe these would-be emigrants are college-educated, including aspiring academics, seeking professional level jobs. (less)
