The plot moves along at a good clip, and if you don't read any introductory essays with spoilers, there's a fair amount of suspense, with a few twists toward the end. Except that Wharton has Undine's parents naming her after a patented hair curling device briefly peddled by her father. Her son Paul is cared for by Ralph's mother and sister before Undine sends for him.(less)

I actually forced myself to finish reading it to do justice to Ms Wharton. The heroine is unlikable, one-dimentional, brutal, and self-centered. She never changes. She wins most of the time, except probably at the end. The writing is beautiful albeit a bit drawn-out. (less)
