I actually hadn't known it was originally done on black - I read it with the "newer" white page background. Looking at some examples with black pages online, they seem perfectly fine. But they aren't bad the way I'm reading them either. You can make the argument that the original black contributes to a sense of bleakness, but the story is already pretty bleak, so in that sense the black could feel unnecessary or even like overkill. And frankly, I think the white pages I'm reading better convey the isolation and/or distancing that he is using for many of his panels. Maybe that's why he decided to change it - OR, it's possible it was a cost thing, ie. all the black ink.(less)
