This is probably the most logically presented book on reading acquisition and reading difficulties I've read. It clarifies how reading is mastered and the deficits that need to be addressed when it is not. It offers an honest review of popular reading problems relative to the essential components of research based successful reading instruction. The challenge is in implementing the findings into instructional practice; however, without a solid understanding of HOW reading is developed instruction is robotic. Kilpatrick offers the basis upon which to build instructional practices, and more importantly, the foundational understanding to change or expand upon one's instruction based on student performance.
