While they "believed" African Americans were less knowledgeable and "didn't care" about their terrible living conditions, they probably knew that African American people would vote them all out of power. Southern leaders were abusers, and no abuser wants to relinquish their power and control. In today's society, the GOP is concerned about the power behind the minority vote so they are trying to put a stop to easy access to polls. History is repeating itself. (less)

Lack of exposure to people of other classes and ethnic backgrounds other than your own (or a limited group) limits teens and young adults understanding of why their society is working the way it is. For some older adults in leadership positions, that is a feature. For the society as a whole, it leads to massive misunderstandings of the forces at work within the United States.

One of the things this book reminded me of, is that the problems within the United States are both massively simple as to source, and as the society evolves, harder and harder to fix.

As in all things, look to see who benefits. And right now, that's the country's oligarchy and military industrial complex.
