Although a church ceremony was expected after a "handfasting" it was not always conducted and the "handfasting" ceremony was considered as legally binding as a marriage. Couples would often be married by itinerant friars (or indeed men claiming to be such) and this was held to be as valid as a church ceremony. Consummation after handfasting was generally expected to be delayed until the church ceremony was held, but there was a deal of leniency in play. (less)

Does anyone know if this author plans to write anything else? Yeah, his bio says he's working on his next novel, but he's had a decade to write it and I've seen no publicity about anything forthcoming. Maybe he took his huge one-hit-wonder paycheck and decided to retire? (I mean, I would.)
