Hi there, Tianna,
Thanks for your question. Perhaps I can help. I'm not sure which parts might seem sacrilegious, but I'm guessing it might be Dolssa's relationship with her beloved that you're referring to. In that instance, those details are taken right out history, with many mystics, both men and women, describing their relationships with Jesus in passionate, romantic, and sexual terms. I had to dial down the heat on it for modern readers. :) Those medievals were in many ways less inhibited that even we are today. Thanks for reading and chiming in!

The general range of time for the European witch hunts was 1450 to 1750. Alarm over heresy happened for centuries before that and came to a crest in Provence / France in the early 13 Century. During the time range of this novel, witchcraft wasn't a concern in the slightest. Court magicians were found throughout Europe, even in church courts. The inquisitors who were alarmed over heresy in 13th Century Provence didn't care a fig about witchcraft or fortunetelling, etc. They were part of everyday life, and when brought up in an inquisitor's interrogation, the inquisitor didn't even bat an eye. This book brings up a lot of great religious questions that young adults might have, such as why God sometimes seems far away, how can we love people that are making bad choices, how can God allow churches to do evil in His name, and why God works through other people instead of just performing miracles every time someone asks.

This book doesn't come across as moralistic or having a "message", though, which I think is for the better; the reader has to think for themselves and derive their own meaning.(less)
