Honestly, given the time period I would lean towards murder based upon race. Why did the train that hit Cudjo not sound it's whistle? Very possibly due to Cudjo's race. Same could be said for David, although it may have simply been a singular or group of white supremacists who drove him onto the tracks, or dumped him there.

I do seem to remember that he wasn't where he told his parents where he was going, however, that may not have been his doing (see the beginning of my response).(less)
