'Titus Groan' provides a good foundation towards understanding the story's characters and setting, and 'Gormenghast' relies a good bit on that knowledge. I also feel it takes some time to get used to Peakes' weighty style. He is not like our modern writers; He is a poet and an artist. His pages are long and deep and thick with detail. But oh is it worth it! (less)
