I am in love with the language in True Grit, it is hilarious and poetic at the same time. What other books use the same device so effectively, specifically to the Old American West, and the florid speech of the late 1800s (excluding Mark Twain, of course, the father of it all)? I thought at one time that Little Big Man may fall under that category, but I can't locate my copy. Any suggestions or recommendations?

What age is appropriate for this book? My eight year is an advanced reader who reads everything she gets her hands on, she just finished and loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder series and so my husband thought she might enjoy this but I fear it's a bit heavy and dark for her yet.

There is some language such as "h*ll," "d*mn," and "son of a b****," but each of these are used only once or twice throughout the book.

Also, it may be considered fairly dark since the main character is a 14 year old girl on a mission to avenge her father by killing his murderer, and there are references to dead bodies, hanging, and blood from wounds.

My personal recommendation for reading this book would be age 12+, but I always prefer telling the "red flags" parents may be concerned about, so they can make their own decision. I hope this helps!(less)
