Is this book or 'The Siege of Krishnapur' the first part of this trilogy? In the title it says #2 but on the previous page it says 'book #1'

No one seems to be talking about this, so here goes: was Major was actually dug out and reburied? If so, why...? And by whom? I first thought it was a mistake, then that he imagined it, but John Banville's introduction seems to treat the first iteration as factual. (Note, I'm not referring to the hole having to be re-dug elsewhere --which is what I thought incidentally saved him) Excerpt in comment
