I hear what you say about the set of stupid characters but Chen Xin has topped the charts. What pissed me off throughout the Deaths End was her idleness. I agree Ye Wenjie was stupid but at least she did something she thought was right. Chang Xin did nothing across 700 pages. Every time she needed to do something, be it right or wrong, stupid or not, she simply demonstrated her inability to do anything. (less)

(2) Contact =/= communication (and I am not talking about translation issues), e.g. there is no meaningful communication between humans and roaches despite our frequent contact: hence, roaches prefer to hide from humans if they can; and humans will destroy them when it is convenient or necessary to do so.... though it possible that with enough time, humans will be farming roaches for anti-bacterials or something in "peaceful co-existence"

(3) the "Chain of Suspicion" is not about "inefficiency/lack of communication" between any 2 civilizations; but the logical extrapolation (aka "Chain of Suspicion") from the possibility that, there being multitudes of intelligent civilizations out (statistically speaking), at least one of those civilizations would be willing and able to destroy you-- that's why roaches prefer to hide from humans, even though there are humans who keep them as pets....(less)

A comparable couple of books are: A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky. They're part of a trilogy (I haven't read the third since it got poor ratings), although the books within the trilogy pretty much stand alone.

I assume you've read Dune and Ender's Game. Dune is original, although in a different way. Ender's game is a great story, but perhaps not as original. Some of the Ender's Game sequels are notable for originality, but nothing like Death's End.

Those four books (Dune, Ender's Game, A Fire Upon the Deep, and A Deepness In the Sky) are the only ones I've read that compare with the Three Body trilogy.(less)
