However, C.B. mentioned his calling it that because, in his and Briddey's case, it would prove to be far more literally hooking up as in making a connection. He was referencing a physical interlocking, shall we say, as well as a mental connection, and the language we still use with regard to to telephones. It's not really possible to leave a phone "off the hook anymore" but that metaphor is still quite common.
