The protagonist is in her late twenties/early thirties. There is a romantic relationship in the books, but we don;t see many intimate details (mostly they just wake up next to each other). The material that could prevent me from recommending these to a younger age group would be the depictions of slavery, war crimes, and an extremely anti-women society. All of these are portrayed extremely negatively, but their portrayal is unflinching and could be distressing to younger readers. I probably wouldn't say that they are YA novels in that they don't indulge in any of the common story devices of the YA genre and they aren't about children/teenagers. (less)
