I don't think the lawn mower was anything but horrific for everyone. I was confused why the mom took issue with whether she SAW the child run into the mower or came out after the scream - The author was probably trying to show how the parent had felt "guilty" and understood how things this ugly could happen so fast without intention and how we 'modify' reality in our memories so we can live with ourselves - thereby making it easier for her to understand her daughter's confession.(less)

It also might have been why the principal heavily mentioned receiving help with fundraising. They bent the rules for her and put themselves in hot water.

I do wonder though, if the mention that he was on 'medication and 'shouldn't be driving' could be construed as a child endangerment situation. You wouldn't want an inebriated parent picking up their child and then getting into a DWAI related crash with the child in the car.

I thought it was a poorly written scene as well. It might have been scheduled to be cut but missed the deadline or something.(less)
