Am I mis-remembering? Jakob's history was that his father was drunk and couldn't do the execution so Jakob had to step in and finish, after which he ran off to the war. This prologue says different - that father was drunk and when the crowd got rowdy, he and his brother (WHERE DID BROTHER COME FROM) ran off.....
