The writer is a traveling journalist/documentarian(?), he and his fiancee relocated from NYC to a dying, southern, post-plantation town and immersed themselves in what was, essentially, a foreign culture. This choice happened because a charismatic friend who lived there, "on Pluto," invited Grant to visit and he was intrigued by his encounter. Pluto was the name of the bygone plantation his home was located on.(less)
