Kim In one section of the book (chapter 11), John is staying overnight in the caretaker's hut with his best friend, Brendan, to whom he appears to have so…moreIn one section of the book (chapter 11), John is staying overnight in the caretaker's hut with his best friend, Brendan, to whom he appears to have some sort of attraction, which he can't even explain to himself. At this point he thinks:- 'My head, as though filled with helium, has nothing in it to CARRY ME DOWN to rest, to dark, down to sleep'. His problem with sleeping is a fairly constant theme throughout the book, as though he is hyperactive, so he appears to be always hoping to find something that will 'carry him down'. (less)
