The Illuminati weren't actually Freemasons (though some individual members were also members of Masonic Lodges).

There are several things that qualify you to be a Freemason:

1. A belief in a supreme being*
2. Being a man*
3. A desire to improve yourself in some way

* - These two items are not universal and there are regions in which local Freemasonry does not have these restrictions.
