I bought this books not knowing that it's a series. Can I read it without reading #1 and #2?

OTOH, I had read some of the Marcus Didius Falco books previously, so I wasn't completely confused about some of the characters. But I'd say, give it a go. One of the things Lindsey Davis does very well is to slip some sly modern-day social commentary into her stories. That helps make her setting more accessible.(less)
