If you've read some of Shannon Hale's other books, especially The Goose Girl series, it's kind of similar to that kind of magic -- slow and ordinary, yet bringing with it a touch of something extraordinary.(less)

There is some kissing and maybe one or two other things, but overall I think it is a good book that any girl late middle school age who likes to read would enjoy. (less)
