I don't recall offhand when it was written but my copy of Sandkings is over twenty years old and I bought the book in a second hand bookshop. The story is a good one, though there are much better stories in the same collection as well as rather worse. Recommended (both the story and the collection).

It has been adapted into a graphic novel which was published in 2014 in four parts and is available free online if you google. The graphic novel has a high standard of artwork as far as that goes (albeit all the characters are Caucasian and the settings aren't at all imaginative - very DC Comics style in fact; and there's a fair bit of nudity), and sticks mostly to the story, but leaves no room for imagination and destroys the sense of wonder and confusion in the main character's mind.
