Unfortunately western psychiatric diagnoses do not have a scientific basis the way most physical diseases and ailments do. If a doctor says you have cancer, HIV, or a broken limb, that is because they actually found cancer cells, the HIV virus, or a physical break in your bone. If they say you have "bipolar", "ADHD", or "psychoneurosis", there is no scan or test they've done to determine that. Instead, they look at your symptoms and certain collections of symptoms are said to be this or that disorder. Determining which clusters of symptoms form their own disorder is a process that's done with a handful of doctors and is done in secret, but at the end of the day -- yes, it's effectively made up. If you take 3 people diagnosed with a given psychiatric disorder, there is no reason to believe that they all share the same physical or psychological root for their symptoms. It would be like instead of diagnosing people with the flu, hayfever, or a cat allergy, we grouped all of the similar symptoms together into a disorder called "sneezeitis". (less)
