There are no maps?

Wynne There are two maps. One is the Canal as the French dealt with it, the other as of 1914.

Why, why, why, are there no maps? A book like this should have easily one map per chapter. But no, only two and not helpful in early chapters, and pretty crummy maps at that. What a stupendous oversight!

So I have put this on request to read at my local library, just wondering if the book is mostly factual or a lot of made up stories using facts?

Has anyone read the abridged version? I am not sure if the abridged version exists only in Audio format, but I am going to try it, as I am heading to Panama. I love McCullough and from the reviews I have read , he had not fully developed his craft in this earlier work.

This reader is and was amazed at the absence of any pictures from all the writing about the immensity and scale of the empty locks and the artists who came to draw them. Surely photographs exist as well. Finally, I was almost insulted that in a digital book photos are still bunched in special sections and then rest unmentioned in the table of contents. Why this oversight?

Was the secrecy regarding the U.S. involvement in creating the Republic of Panama a precedent or a replication of such abuse of international political power?
