I've not read "The Deep South", but the man seems humble enough to me in the Rick Steves interview/podcast regarding his experience in the research for the book:

Allendale, once thriving with small businesses, was cut-off from the outside by I-95. Perfectly illustrates the death of some areas when interstates are built. A map would help support much of what Theroux shares about the culture of the deep South that many never see, don't know about, and if they do, may ignore.(less)
