Kaigun details what it says it does on the cover, while Dull's book (which isn't Dull, at least if you're into naval history :) ) is an operational history of the Japanese fleet during WW2, going into detail of all the major and many of the minor battles. Kaigun takes the reader through the IJN up to Japan's declaration of war (but thematically, more than chronologically, although there is obviously some chronological progression), while Battle History takes the reader through the IJN (with a focus on surface combat, although the key carrier battles are all covered) during the war.

Both are excellent (I read Kaigun earlier in the year, and have got more than half-way through Dull (and flicked through and read bits further down)) and easy to recommend for people interested in the IJN.(less)
