The main characters remained throughout (by and large) and the reader could follow their development through various story lines. Some writers help new readers 'dip' into a series by limiting the number of hooks from previous titles - this allows the reader to treat it as a standalone. Other writers cram so many references to what went before that it's impossible NOT to follow the series in order. I've not read this series, so I don't know which camp the author's from. My advice? Dive in and read whatever takes your fancy. If you love it, you'll hunt down the start of the series. (less)
