To me, it's too much information for an 8 year old (the book is recommended for 8+), better suited to a 10 year old. I bought Girl Talk by Lizzie Cox for my 8 yo, and I'll be discussing it with her soon. While book has a general description of "the act", it's not as graphic and there's no accompanying illustration!!
The Girl Wise series is also very good and covers a range of topics (including navigating friendships).(less)
