The take on religion here is fairly one-sided, which personally I had no problem with, but wonder whether the nuanced shading offered other topics and characters might have added something? Or perhaps it was my skewed view that missed any redeeming feature in the church's portrayal? Difficult to find any other criticism to this poetic, beautifully written tale though!

Although I would argue that Stephen's belief and trust in God, which has been his strength, is sapped when he encounters the sly trapeze artist. Is faith in human goodness is restored on meeting many of the other characters, especially Lula. Though discovering his own sexuality, which would be against the teaching of the church, means he condemns himself. What do others think?(less)
