I mean, there were bits that made me want to read the trilogy for more depth but nowhere was I left confused for lack of reading the previous books.
I'm now making my way through the trilogy and having read this one first is lending me an interesting perspective. It didn't ruin anything for sure.(less)

Also Abercrombie is more cynical than Lynch, and dare I say, a more consistently good writer, though I am looking forward to the next Gentlemen Bastards. (less)

The book is full of extreme, relentless, and bloody violence beyond anything you'd see in middle-grade YA novels, not to mention the vulgar language and explicit sexual content. That being said you should read the book anyway as it's incredible. (less)
